Earlier this week Mid and East Antrim Cllr Beth Adger MBE described the impending closure of Carnalbanagh Primary School as “ridiculous”.

Her reaction came in response to the Department of Education decision’s that the school will have to close its doors in August 2021.

And in a follow-up statement issued to the Larne Times today (Friday), Cllr Adger, who has been involved in the campaign to save the school, praised the high standard of education afforded to pupils and the collaborative approach with other schools in the area, which ensured children had access to the best modern resources and opportunities for learning.

The DUP representative said: “The decision to close the school will have a far reaching impact on the entire community in Carnalbanagh. The school is a focal point in the local area and it is ridiculous to see the decision which has been reached.

“I am very proud of my background, having been brought up in Carnalbanagh with a love for this beautiful landscape and its people.

“I am so disappointed that future generations of children will not have the opportunity to attend the school, which has nurtured and championed the best interests of the local community since 1827.”

The axe has been hanging over Carnalbanagh PS following an Education Authority recommendation to shut the school in summer 2021. Confirmation of the decision came just weeks after Education Minister Peter Weir toured the Glenview Road site in September.
