VIDEO: Can you help Anne Marie and Rural Action save our best local phrases?

They’re the phrases our parents and grandparents used to say – and now radio presenter Anne Marie McAleese wants your help to preserve them.

The Causeway Coast woman is on the board of Rural Action and they are on a mission to preserve the rural sayings from Northern Ireland and the border counties.

"I think wherever you grew up across rural Northern Ireland and the border counties, most of us know some of these great expressions that coloured everyday conversations.

“They made us laugh, offered advice and somehow they always seemed to fit the occasion perfectly.

“So, if you can think of any, we want to hear from you. Because, the thing is many of these sayings are disappearing. As generations pass, we risk losing those wee gems of wisdom, humour and local character that make our rural communities so special.

"That’s why Rural Action is creating a very special fundraising book of rural sayings and we need your help.

"We’re looking for the phrases, expressions, bits of folklore, weather wisdom, farming humour and just old-fashioned advice that have been passed down through your family and community – the sayings that still make you smile, the ones you hear yourself repeating today without even thinking about it.

"Every contribution will help us celebrate and preserve this wonderful part of our rural heritage while supporting the Rural Action Awards which fund volunteer-led projects that make a real difference in rural communities.”

Submit your sayings via this link https://bit.ly/RuralSayingsBook or call 028 8648 0900. The deadline is Friday, July 31.
