Amal Clooney, who is a top human rights barrister, is part of the legal team representing the ‘Hooded men’, one of who was Lurgan man the late Gerry McKerr.

However Mr McIlmurray said that meeting is not due for another few weeks and the newly wed couple are in London on a 48 hour visit on private business.

Mrs Clooney is expected to travel to the north next month to visit the legal team representing the men who have made serious claims of brutal torture at the hands of British soldiers and the RUC.

Mr McIlmurray said: “Amal and George have flown into London together within the past hour and the press are speculating that they coming over here to meet us. Several calls coming in suggesting this.

“I can confirm this is sheer speculation and they are NOT coming to Ireland. It is personal business. A 48 hour visit.”
