Captain’s prize triple for Walter

The prize was presented by John Breadon, 2012 Captain of the Club.

Walter had scored 19 points for his front nine, a good birdie three at the difficult fifth giving him four of them. This made up for single pointers at one and nine and meant he had played the outward nine in two over par 38.

Walter went three better than this for the inward nine covering it in one under par for 22 points. The par three fifteenth gave him his only dropped shot while the earlier par three twelfth was birdied. Another bird was grabbed with a four at the long thirteenth. He parred the three last holes to pick up seven points from them and clinch the big victory with 41 points overall.

Michael Thompson came closest to catching Walter but came up two points off the pace with 39 off his handicap of eight. Michael’s front nine was birdie-less and a mixture of pars and bogeys saw him play to his handicap for 18 points.

It took Michael to the thirteenth to get the elusive first birdie, a four, then another popped up via a two at the fifteenth. As with the winner Michael produced a strong finish to be back in 37 shots, one over par, and had scored 21 points.

Gary Todd was pushed into third on countback with the other 39 pointer of the day. Gary scored 19 points on the way out and was going along nicely for the first five holes of the back nine when he wobbled a bit and scored two single points at fifteen and sixteen.

All was not lost however as Gary then parred the difficult seventeenth and finished with a welcome birdie three for four points to boost him into a podium spot.

Paul Cooley played the front nine in one over par 37 to set up a gross prize for himself. Birdies at the short third and the long fourth were compensation for a double bogey six at the ninth. The back nine had no birdies but Paul had logged six straight pars before he got to sixteen and seventeen which gave him a double bogey six at each.

A closing par helped to get him back in 40 for a gross score of 77. Other prizewinners were Damian Morelli with 37 points winning the Council prize, Alastair Glenn with 34 points took the Past Captain’s prize and John Moss, Captain of Royal Portrush Golf Club was the Best Visitor with 32 points.

Christine Hutchinson won the Ladies Section with a score of 42 points off her handicap of eighteen and runner up was Diane McKay with 39 points from her mark of 36.
