Gerald John Brampton Wood, aged 40, from Garvaghy Park, Portadown pleaded guilty to theft.

The court heard police received a report of a theft of eight bags of washing pods worth £96 from Eurospar on the Brownstown Road on January 7 this year.

The defendant’s barrister, Mr Conor Coulter, said his client has “an appalling record”.

He explained his client was released after spending three months in custody but found himself back in custody on “more serious matters”.

"There’s a clear need to address addiction issues,” said Mr Coulter, adding the repeated thefts were to fund an addiction.

District Judge Michael Ranaghan pointed out the defendant’s criminal record of 151 convictions, several of which were for dishonesty.

He sentenced the defendant to four months in jail plus the offender levy of £25.
