Matt's McGovern song goes viral

One fan of the green and white army celebrated some unexpected success of his own last week, when his football song went viral.

After being challenged by several friends to write a chant about Michael McGovern - the NI goalkeeper who achieved legendary status during his performance at the Euros - Portadown man, Matty Guy, rose to the occasion.

Having travelled to France to watch NI play earlier this month, Matty had no shortage of inspiration. Shortly after penning the chant, Matty recorded the song and uploaded it to Facebook. Within hours, he’d created a hit.

“One of the highlights while watching the NI v Wales game on Saturday was the girl sitting at the next table turning to her friend and saying, “Mike McGovern! Oh, there’s a song about him - I watched it online,” shared Matty Guy, a former Portadown College student who currently works in Glasgow.

The video soon came to the attention of Sky Sports News and now has almost 45,000 views - as well as being retweeted by Northern Ireland player, Kyle Lafferty.

Whilst Northern Ireland have now left the tournament, Matty remains passionate: “We dared to dream - and I am so, so proud of our wee country!”
