The Fiona Brady Foundation is committed to increasing awareness of the signs and symptoms of skin cancer; educating the public on sun safety and preventative measures; providing a platform for individuals to share their own skin cancer journeys, helping to foster conversation and reduce stigma; empowering individuals to advocate for their own health, including seeking further advice or second opinions if they have concerns.

Now Gary, who published a collection of poetry called ‘I Talk to Trees’ to raise funds for the Foundation, is asking for support for a north west mum who is putting her love of walking to the ultimate test this September, taking on an incredible 500-mile challenge to raise £1,000 for the Fiona Brady Foundation.

In 2025, Laura Doherty from Tamnaherin joined the walking challenge group Diet Starts Monday, taking part in monthly challenges which gave her even more motivation and determination to keep walking. But Laura had always wanted to do a walking challenge that could make a real difference to someone else.

That opportunity came unexpectedly when Laura won a skin cancer awareness hamper at work, which had been kindly gifted by the Fiona Brady Foundation. Receiving the hamper immediately inspired Laura to find a way to support the charity in return.

“As soon as I got the news, I automatically wanted to give something back to this great charity,” Laura said.

Her goal is to raise £1,000, but Laura is hoping that with the support of family, friends and the wider community, she can go beyond that target.

The challenge is not simply about reaching 500 miles, it is about raising awareness, bringing people together and supporting a foundation which does so much for those affected by skin cancer.

Anyone who would like to support Laura’s 500-mile challenge can donate through the Foundation’s website at www.fbfoundation.co.uk, via their Facebook page, The Fiona Brady Foundation, or Instagram, @thefbfoundation.co.uk.

Donations can also be made directly through the challenge’s GoFundMe page.
