Plans for new permanent lifeguard unit on Castlerock beach submitted to Causeway Coast and Glens Council
The RNLI has put forward plans for a new lifeguard post at Castlerock beach
Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council’s Planning Department recently received the application, which seeks to install a Beach Lifeguard Unit (BLU) and associated permanent terrace/platform, overlooking the ‘swim between the flags’ area of the beach.

According to a supporting planning statement, the RNLI seasonally locate a BLU without a platform at a flat, rocky outcrop to the west of the promenade and beach, but the new BLU’s more central position on the beach will provide a better vantage point for life guards to view the beach and sea, particularly the ‘swim between the flags’ area.
“Furthermore this location is close to the pedestrian walkways from the promenade, where beach users will walk past the unit, providing greater visibility of the RNLI’s presence and message, including opportunity to reinforce the ‘swim between the flags’ advice as indicated on the unit,” the statement added.
“The proposed location will also mean that the unit is less visible from the promenade and the neighbouring properties, due to the extensive sand dunes located between, creating better integration.
“It will also reduce the risks, where the existing location has in the past resulted in some of the general public and lifeguards sustaining some minor injuries related to the rocky outcrop location.”
The 1.7metre high platform will be a permanent feature while the BLU, which is 3.15m high and provides an indoor facility to accommodate a lookout and some storage of equipment, will only be in place on a seasonal basis when the RNLI provide an on site presence.
