Call for increased public bins in Carryduff as rubbish flows onto the streets
A councillor has called for an increase in the number of times public bins in Carryduff are emptied after it was reported that waste was overflowing onto the streets.
The local authority had been tasked to increase the amount of times it empties the bins with the amount of rubbish flowing on to Carryduff streets becoming a regular problem.
However, the council’s environment committee was told that the “practise has stopped” of high levels of waste being disposed with capacity of the bins now improved.
Councillor Jamie Harpur said: “In regards to the public bins in Carryduff, I feel like I am contacting the council team every week about them overflowing.

“How frequently are the bins being lifted and emptied ?
“Can this be increased or further bins put around the Carryduff area?
“They seem to be overflowing every week and it’s obviously going onto the streets, which you definitely don’t want either.”
According to Lisburn and Castlereagh City Council’s website, dropping litter or misusing public street bins is an environmental crime subject to a £100 fixed penalty notice.
A council officer responded: “In some of the litter bins you mentioned, we are aware of a level of public abuse of waste being disposed of in those.
“We were progressing that and I believe that practice has stopped.
“Whether that was just by the person’s own endeavours or through the efforts that we were making, which should help improve the capacity of those bins to meet normal usage.
“The frequency and service of the bins should be adequate, but we can have that conversation if needs be.”
