Daniel all set for San Marino

LURGAN Celtic received a bit of good news this week with striker Daniel Ryan (inset) called up for the Northern Ireland team for the UEFA Regions Cup.

The tournament will be played in San Marino in March and Celtic manager Ciaran O’Kane says the news of Daniel’s call-up is fully merited.

“I am thrilled for Daniel because he has been on fire for us this season,” said O’Kane. “We got word from Harry McConkey that he was including Daniel in his squad so after some bad news at the weekend with the top of the table match being called off this was a welcome boost for the club.

“Daniel fully deserves his chance and I have no doubt he will do very well in the tournament.”

Northern Ireland will play hosts San Marino, England and the Republic of Ireland in the competition.

As for the broken glass incident which forced the big match off last week the manager said it was a shame. “The build-up to the game was great and everyone was buzzing for the game.

“Even with ten minutes to go we thought we had found all the glass and then another piece was found and at that stage we could not take any chances. We were upset and angry because we were at full strength and keen to take on Knockbreda. Now that game will be put back to later in the season.

“The game with Queen’s on Saturday will go ahead after the IFA confirmed we could clear the pitch and make it ready for Saturday. This is another tough match because they are not far behind us and will put up a strong challenge.

“However, we are playing well and go into the game full of confidence,” added O’Kane.
