Garvey Seconds through in Irish Cup

LISNAGARVEY Seconds got off to a winning start in the Irish Junior Cup on Saturday by beating Suttonians 4-3 at Comber Road.

Garvey were pleased to provide starts for Andrew Allen and David Morris in midfield and also welcome the U18 keeper Gavin Adams.

Garvey started well and put Suttonians under some early pressure but it was the visitors who nearly went ahead early on.

Suttonians hit Garvey on the counter attack and flashed the ball across an open Garvey net only for their centre forward to miss a glorious chance.

Garvey piled the pressure on the Suttonians defence and were soon rewarded. John Gray stole a pass from the centre back and only had the keeper to beat and put Garvey ahead with a well taken goal.

Garvey were soon ahead again thanks to a sublime piece of skill by Philip Stirling. Philip worked the ball well on the left hand side of the circle and, with the keeper advancing, chipped the ball into the top right hand corner.

Garvey made it three ten minutes later after a nice team goal. Ross Kelly found Cummins with a sublime pass who crossed the ball from the right and found Halliday lurking to tap the ball home.

Garvey, still in the ascendancy at this point, were soon knocked back following a Suttonians goal from a short corner, just on the stroke of half time.

Suttonians started the second half well and put Garvey under severe pressure. The Garvey defence were not having a good day and gave away a cheap short corner.

Suttonians scored with a neat drag flag to put them just one goal behind. Garvey lost their way and the familiar passing game became a struggle. John Gray soon stepped in to save the day with the fourth goal. John took the ball well at the top of the circle and hit a nice reverse stick shot leaving the keeper with no chance.

Garvey’s joy was soon to be short lived as another cheap short corner was given away resulting in a Suttonians goal.

Garvey were relieved to hear the final whistle and be in the hat for the next round.
