Brian returns with a bang

He was not included in the original team but an injury to Gary Hewitt left team captain Chris Budd a man short.

With his wife Daphne caddying for him, Brian turned out for his one hundredth match in the competition. He was delighted to play against his former club Spa.

The ‘rest’ did him no harm as he defeated the former international football referee Alan Snoddy by 4 & 3. He felt tired after the match but had no other ill effects.

Lisburn required four matches to win the tie. In the top match Brian Rainey proved too much for former Lisnagarvey hockey star Howard Walker.

Colin Hill hit a magnificent tee shot to the 13th green to win the hole and the match against Andy Ward the former international rugby player.

Randal Kernaghan’s long game could not compensate for his shaky putting stroke as he lost on the 13th green. The remaining matches were very close but Packo Pim and Andy Neill won their matches on the 17th green. Ian Suffern was called in when he was one ahead playing the 16th.

Lisburn now play Castleblayney in the quarter final with the first match in Lisburn.

The Junior Cup campaign ended at Moyola Park when Lisburn went out to City of Derry. In the top match Jack Shellard played very well to win on the 17th green.

The other matches were very close. David Bolas and Ricky Leathem were always behind but lost on the 17th green. Aaron Marshall and Josh Robinson held the advantage until the final holes.

Aaron failed to take advantage of his opponent’s three putts on the 17th green and lost by one hole. Josh looked likely to win his match on the 18th when the result had been decided.

Blaris Trophy

A magnificent back nine of 34 helped Bryan Heatherington (7) score 43 points to make him a clear winner of the Blaris Trophy.

After completing the font nine in 38 he had birdies at 11, 14 and 15 to go one under par. He dropped a stroke at 17 but finished with a par three for the best round of the day. Chris Spence (9) went out in 34 for 24 points. Double bogeys at the two par fives on the back nine restricted him to 16 points but it was sufficient to secure second place.

Five players finished on 39 points: Jim Bell, Robert McKinnon, Ken Ross, Peter McNeice and Martin Blakely. Jim’s 20 points on the back nine gave him third place. Ken ha a ‘ding’ on the final hole.

Ryan Symington had birdies at the first and fifth holes for a front nine of 34. A bogey at 13 followed by a double at 14 gave him a back nine of 39 for a 73 and the best gross prize.

Wednesday Stableford: 1st Mark Toulson (16) 43 pts, 2nd Andrew Parr (9) 42 pts, 3rd Peter Kelly (15) 41 pts.

Glen McCambley and Connor Heasley were top scorers in a very successful Fun Night on Friday.
