John captures Carson crown

JOHN White rolled back the years, to capture the Frank Carson Trophy at Dunmurry Golf Club, last Saturday.

A member of the club for over forty years, John showed he’s lost none of his ability, after scoring an excellent 40 points, in difficult conditions.

Over the front nine, the 15 handicap golfer, produced pars at the third, seventh and eighth to amass 19 points.

It was on the back nine that he made his score, birdies at twelve and thirteen, helped him to 21 points coming home, to give him an unbeatable total.

Peter Morgan (6) took second spot on 39 points.

A member of the Fred Daly team, Peter struggled over the front nine, opening with a double bogey six, and reached the turn in five over par after three more bogeys at five, six and eight.

A birdie at the tenth sparked him into life, and further birdies followed at the twelfth and thirteenth.

A double bogey six, at the fifteenth, derailed his charge somewhat, but another birdie at the seventeenth, ensured him of second place, with a 23 point, two under par score for the back nine.

Ivan Gilmore (9) grabbed third place on 38 points, beating 4 other golfers on the same mark.

Some erratic golf over the front nine saw Ivan score 18 points, which included birdies at the fifth and ninth. He also managed to include two holes, where he failed to score at all.

He was much steadier over the back nine, with bogeys at the eleventh, thirteenth and fifteenth, offset by a birdie at fourteenth, his two over par, giving him 20 points for the nine, securing him third.

Simon Docherty (13) took fourth place, ahead of Ward Orr (7), who edged out Andrew Knox (6) and Derek McLachlan (3).

Derek was equally unfortunate, his fine one over par 71, also just missing out for the best gross on the day, as Steven Crowe (+2) took the honours for the second successive week.

Steven produced a level par round of 70, making birdies at the eighth and eleventh and dropping just two shots, at the seventh and sixteenth.

Dunmurry’s Ulster Cup challenge is over for another year, as they crashed out in the first round, losing to a good Holywood side nine and a half points to four and a half.

They faced an uphill task to overcome a five and a half to one and a half away deficit, and although signs where promising, they eventually succumbed, losing the home leg by the odd match.

The Holt Shield team played their second group match at Clandeboye on Sunday and came away with a superb 3/2 win to cement their lead in the group.

Andrew Cochrane led the way with a fine 4&2 win, before a battling Aaron O’Rorke lost 2&1.

With Shane McCotter losing 4&3 and Gareth Shirlow winning by the same margin it left Ward Orr to grab the vital win on the final green.

Next up are home and away fixtures with neighbours, Malone.
