Moore and Caulfield go so close at Worlds

While a number of the Northern Ireland teams performed well, it was the seniors (over 40s) who came closest to bringing a world title back over the Irish Sea.

The six man squad included the Sperrin’s Billy Moore and Lee Caulfield, as well as former Coleraine singles champion Neil McKelvey.

Having shown great form in topping the group stages, they faced a talented Scottish side in the semis, cheered on by a home support, but they battled through with Caulfield sinking the winning black, sending them to an all Ireland final against a very strong Republic of Ireland side.

The final was a ding dong affair the whole way, but Northern Ireland managed to open up a 12-9 lead in the race to 13 and it looked like they may well be crowned world champions.

However, an inspired performance by the South saw them haul their way back level before Caulfield was narrowly beaten in the final frame. However, both players along with the rest of their team should take a lot away from their performance over the week.

Corey Sweeney and James Nesbitt, both from Potters Snooker Club, were also in Perth as part of the under 23 side. Again, these 2 players can be proud of their performances as they were part of a strong team which agonisingly lost 13-11 to a strong English outfit in the semi finals.

The next international action in the 8 ball pool world will be the Nations Cup held here in Coleraine starting next Monday (10 th November) at the Lodge Hotel.

League players in action will include the likes of Marc Hutchinson, Willie Eakin and Raymond Stockman in what is sure to be yet another great event.
