Seniors suffer away-day blues in Dundonald defeat

Lurgan’s NIBA Division One campaign suffered a setback on Saturday with defeat to Dundonald by 83-59.

Conditions proved difficult as Lurgan hit the road in search of a first league win.

The 24-shot reverse will hit club confidence following positive passages of play across the afternoon.

On rink one, I.Mitchell, M.Bunting, J.Gilliland and H.Cosgrove finished level at 21 shots apiece during a fixture that featured both groups with periods on top.

Lurgan moved clear by four on a number of occasions but high-scoring ends kept Dundonald in contention.

A last-end win secured Dondonald a half-point return.

The rink of R.McCullough, D,McCabrey, J.McCullough and skip RM.Montgomery were down from the start across rink two.

Lurgan produced some impressive play but found the Dundonald skip in inspired form during the 12-shot reverse.

Early setbacks left Lurgan on the backfoot across rink three as B.Boness, D.Dempsey, P.McGrail and skip A.Briggs struggled to gain a foot hold. A fine fightback provided Lurgan with a srong return and the gap was just two shots before Dundonald produced a strong finish for the 24-12 home win.

The final rink of R.McClune, G.Bunting, S.Poots and skip A.Roberts recorded some decent bowls but were 11-1 down across the initial exchanges.

Lurgan cut the deficit to turn the tables and hole a lead entering the last end.

However, Lurgan dropped two shots to tie the rink on 18-18.

LADIES

Lurgan ladies picked up a seven-point success in the opening home game of the season.

The 76-42 defeat of Whitehead resulted in a clean sweep against a side with 13 players following a panel hit by illness.

As a result, the visitors had a score reduction of 25 per cent automatically imposed across three rinks.

On rink one, Lurgan’s Irene Doone was skip alongside Irene Cunningham, Eileen Robson and Catherine McGrail.

They finished in front by 19-12.

Winnifred Kirkwood, the skip on rink two, enjoyed a winning tally of 23-5.25 with help from Edith Hobson, Nora Johnston and Molly Ward.

On rink three, Iris Anderson, Gwen Hayes, Dot McCoy and Genny Little recorded success by 18-12.

Lurgan closed out rink four with a lead of 16-12.75 thanks to skip Angela Thompson, Beth Wilson, Joan Bunting and Jennifer McVeigh.
