Young South Derry who made 'foolish lapse' fined £450 and given driving disqualification

A South Derry teenager was fined a total of £450 with a £15 offender’s levy at Dungannon Magistrates Court on Friday for motoring offences.

The 19-year-old was convicted of having no insurance, failing to display ‘R’ plates and using a vehicle in a dangerous condition at Sunnyside Park, Maghera, on September 20, 2025.

District Judge Francis Rafferty convicted Tony Diamond, of Deerpark Road, Castledawson, after considering papers in the case and being told that the defendant did not wish to give evidence.

The judge also imposed a six-month driving disqualification consecutive with a period of disqualification he received for other matters in July this year.

A defence lawyer said Diamond is a fully qualified concretor who received a community service order imposed in July which, he stressed, “was going well”.

He pointed out that the defendant is a young man who had made “a foolish lapse.”

Judge Rafferty allowed Diamond 16 weeks to discharge the fines.
