David adds another string to his bow

TALENTED Newtownabbey cellist David Sloan has won a coveted place in the European Union Youth Orchestra (EUYO).

The 20-year-old, from Jordanstown, is one of just 140 musicians aged 14 to 24 to have won a place in the prestigious orchestra.

Around 4,000 young people auditioned for the privilege.

David, who is currently studying Maths at Edinburgh University, said: “I’m very pleased to have won the place. I can’t believe it if I’m honest.

“I auditioned in December and March for a place and both auditions were tough so I am delighted to have been accepted.”

A former Belfast High School Head Boy, David grew up in a musical family and has been playing cello since the age of six.

He has been Principal Cello in the National Youth Orchestra, the Ulster Youth Orchestra and the City of Belfast Youth Orchestra.

“Music has always been very close to my heart and I hope to pursue it further by going to music college when I graduate from Edinburgh.”
