McCann calls forsupport forstriking workers

Foyle MLA Eamonn McCann has called on the public to support workers going on strike against the closure of the local electoral office.

Workers at Queen Street are being handed a choice between giving up their jobs and travelling long distances every day,” said the People Before Profit representative.

“If the plan goes through, there will be no electoral office outside Belfast. Thirty decent jobs - at Banbridge, Newtownards, Newtownabbey, Ballymena and Omagh as well as Derry - will be wiped out and the positions shifted to Belfast.

“This shouldn’t be allowed.

“The workers concerned are members of the public service union Nipsa, which is officially backing strike action next Friday, June 3, and on the following Tuesday, June 6. The union is also to impose an overtime ban from June 2,” he said.
