210 Moira Guides renew promise at 20.10 on 20:10:2010

THERE was a unique occurrence in Moira recently, when 210 girls involved in the Guide movement celebrated the end of their Centenary and the start of their new one by renewing their guiding promise on October 20 at 8.10pm, or 20.10, 20/10.

Girl Guides across the UK held events on the evening, with each district renewing their promise at the same time - 20.10 on 20/10 2010.

However, in another strange twist, the Moira district has some 210 girls who are members of the Girl Guides, ranging from 4-18 years old.

Janice Lightowler, who has been involved with Girl Guiding for 27 years, 22 of which have been spent in Moira, said the guides had a "brilliant night" as they enjoyed a campfire sing along and brought items to be placed into a time capsule for future generations of Girl Guides to explore.

Janice stated: "The future is looking amazing for Girl Guiding, to be going into our second centenary is amazing.

"Guides across the UK held events simultaneously, and we decided to have a campfire sing along. The girls all brought photographs of themselves for the time capsule and copied their fingerprints and signed them for the capsule, before we enjoyed some cake.

"There was such a good atmosphere," added Janice.

As the girls renewed their promise, the group stood in a rainbow formation, before they received a unique centenary promise badge.

It has been a busy year for those involved in Girl Guiding as they celebrated their first 100 years. Janice said: "This night was celebrating the end of the last century and the beginning of the new one."

The Moira Guides, who meet in St. John's Parish Centre most nights of the week, have become so popular that many of the age groups, from Rainbows to the Senior Section, have a waiting list to join. However,

Janice said that the Moira District is always searching for new helpers and leaders.
