The Ballykeel teenager had been tipped for a summer switch after spending part of pre-season at the Scottish Premier League club - now managed by former Showgrounds boss Tommy Wright - but the move failed to materialise.

Lowry was back in United’s colours at the weekend, scoring in the Sky Blues’ 5-1 win at Larne.

“Neil was disappointed but he now has to knuckle down and work hard,” Ferguson told Times Sport.

“He has some terrific attributes to his game, not least his pace, it’s now just about making the best use of those attributes.

“Up until now, he has been used mostly as an impact substitute - now it’s up to him to push for a regular starting place,” added Ferguson, who also saw his side beat Lisburn Rangers 8-1 as well as losing 1-0 to the Mexico Elite Milk Cup squad.

United continue their preparations with a match at Desermartin tonight (Tuesday), while on Saturday, they take on Bangor at the Showgrounds (3pm) as part of the club’s open day activities which run from 12 noon.

United’s final match will be against PSNI at Newforge next Monday night in a memorial fixture for former club treasurer Noel Millar.

Ferguson expects winger Neal Gawley to sign an amateur deal this week after playing in a number of United’s pre-season games.
