Commander Alan Shepard, the United States astronaut, is photographed lying in his space capsule, Freedom 7, waiting for the blast-off in May 1961. This was a special "radio picture" which had been sent to the News Letter's office on the day that Commander Shepard had gone into space, hot on the heels of the Soviet Union's cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin (Gagarin went to space on April 12, 1961 while Shepard went into space on May 5, 1961).
